A Quantum Leap of Imagination:
Krystian Lupa and Krzysztof Warlikowski in Contemporary European Theatre

Dr. Olga Śmiechowicz visited Amsterdam to discuss two of the most important contemporary Polish theatre directors Krystian Lupa and Krzysztof Warlikowski. Dr. Śmiechowicz talked about the productions directed by Krzysztof Warlikowski which were established on classical Greek texts, specifically Euripides’ Electra and The Bacchae as well as (A)pollonia, based on the texts by Aeschylus, Euripides, H. Krall and J. M. Coetzee. Introduced by Olga Krasa-Ryabets. Followed by discussion. Organized by the Centre for Aliative Research in co-operation with University of Amsterdam. The lecture took place at Potgieterzaal, Singel 425, Amsterdam on May 22, 2017 at 17:00.

Krystian Lupa (November 7, 1943 – )
Renowned theatre director and stage designer. Dr. Śmiechowicz focuses on Lupa’s work inspired by dramas and novels of Thomas Bernhard, namely Kalkwerk; Ritter, Dene, Voss; Extinction and Woodcutters.

Krzysztof Warlikowski (May 26, 1962 – )
One of Poland’s most inventive theatre directors. After studying history, Romance languages and philosophy at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków, Warlikowski left for Paris in 1983. There he attended a seminar on Classical theatre at the École Pratique des Hautes Études and studied philosophy and French language and literature at the Sorbonne. He returned to Poland in 1989 and was admitted to the Theatre Directing Department of the State Higher School of Theatre in Kraków, where he studied under Krystian Lupa. The groundwork for his theatre was established around four subjects: Antiquity – the Bible – the Holocaust – Shakespeare.
